Orazio Giustolisi

Prof. Orazio Giustolisi is full Professor at the Technical University of Bari (Politecnico di Bari) in Italy and former Dean of the Engineering Faculty of Taranto of the Technical University of Bari. He is a member of the permanent faculty staff of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DICA) since 2000 and formerly he was member of the Department of Water Engineering (DIA), in the same University, since 1990. Currently, he is teaching of Management of Water Systems and Waterworks (Undergraduate and Postgraduate). He has 18 years experience with numerical modelling applied to hydraulic engineering. During his career, he has been working on: Unsteady state flow in water distribution systems (Experimental tests on safety facilities, Modelling of unsteady state flow, Modelling of cavitation phenomena), Modelling of environmental systems (Input-Output Dynamical Neural Networks, Support Vector Machines, Genetic Programming), Management and planning of Water Systems (Rehabilitation, optimal robust design, Reliability, decision support systems, multiobjective optimization), friction factor in pipes with internal artificial macro roughness (Experimental tests, Scientific knowledge discovery from data). He authored/co-authored more than 100 papers on national/international conferences, books and journals. The journal papers have been published in Hydrological Sciences Journal (2005), Water Management Journal (2005), Environmental Modelling and Software (2005), Neurocomputing (2004) and the Journal of Hydroinformatics (2000, 2004, 2005).
As supervisor and principal researcher, he has developed specialized software in Matlab for projects, such as: Evolutionary Polynomial Regression (EPR), Input-Output Artificial Neural Networks (IONN), Water distribution network structural design/rehabilitation and reliability analysis (WDS), Multi-objective and Single-objective Genetic Algorithms (OPTIMOGA/OPTISOGA), Automatic Design of Input-Output Artificial Neural Networks (ADIONN), Automatic Design of Support Vector Machines (ADSVM).

Prof. Giustolisi is: Associate Editor of the Journal of Hydroinformatics (http://www.iwaponline.com/jh/default.htm), Member of the International Scientific Committee of the International Conferences on Hydroinformatics, Member of the International Scientific Committee of Computing and Control for the Water Industry Conferences, Member of the International Scientific Committee of Water Distribution System Analysis Conferences, Member of the Oversight Scientific Committee of Water System Analysis Conferences, Invited speaker in a Plenary Session of CCWI 2007, Outstanding Reviewer Prize for IWA 2006, Honorary Visiting Professor of the University of Exeter – UK since 2006.
